Lines of Research

1 – Biodiversity conservation in coastal and island environments

It aims to promote research on coastal and island environments and their components, considering biological diversity, as well as chemical and physical parameters of both pristine and urban environments, to assess environmental risks and impacts. Additionally, it seeks to encourage predictive and preventive actions to avoid or mitigate the environmental effects of harmful anthropic activities at the local, regional, and global levels. Finally, it aims to develop innovative projects and initiatives focused on environmental recovery, conservation, and education.

2 - Society and development in coastal and island environments

This line of research aims to diagnose, assess, and enable human dynamics related to natural resources and their ecosystem services across their environmental, economic, social, cultural, and educational dimensions. It also seeks to foster the sustainable utilization of coastal natural resources and enhance knowledge about their use, promoting their governance and sustainable management. Lastly, it aims to drive the development of new environmental technologies and/or processes to support local socio-economic productive arrangements.
